Cell Culture

The main objective of this tissue culture facility is to provide alternatives to the animal usage to scientists. CLATR has a class II biological safety cabinet for culturing of human and animal cell lines. The use of animals is minimized wherever possible by using cell lines in place of animals. These cell lines are made available to the scientists of CLATR as well as the outside research institutes. This facility is equipped with CO2 incubators, cell counter, inverted phase contrast microscope, primary cultures and cultivation of established cell lines, and animal tissues. This infrastucture is tailor made for isolation, maintenance and experimentation of primary cells in addition to maintenance of cell lines. The facility is supplied with sterile air through AHU for maintenance of sterile ambience. the lab is an essential part of pre clinical studies for pharmacology, toxicology and biomaterials science. The lab also houses a fluorescence microscope.


Microbiological Analysis

The CLATR is established with a subtle vision of quality control, which requires constant monitoring of microbial levels in the vivarium, at global standards. In addition to regular sentinel programmes, the lab is capable of undertaking basic clinical investigations of biological samples, evaluation of drug sensitivity and resistance, and screening/maintenance of bacterial/fungal cultures.


Pharmacological and Toxicological facility

The highly specialised pharmacological and toxicological setup is established to cater to the growing needs of researchers involved in pre-clinical, pharmacological, toxicological and ayurvedic/herbomineral formulation analysis.

Toxicological research is a dynamic area of utilizing laboratory animals which is highly essential to ensure the safety, efficacy and potential adverse effects of new chemicals and products as medicines, food additives, pesticides, industrial chemicals, the results being used for risk assessment decisions to protect human and animal health.

In-Vivo,in-vitro and in-silico screening of drugs, lead molecules, chemicals, formulations, phytopharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, herbs and herbo-minerals against specific target proteins, disease or disorders (pertaining to ANS, CNS, CVS, metabolic disorders, etc.), and can be performed at par with international standards for evaluating the efficacy and potency of the test substance, with comparative ease amidst competent experts.

The facility encompasses wide range of analytical techniques including haematology and clinical biochemistry. In synergism with other laboratories in the centre, various analyses can be performed with an wholistic approach. Skilled personnel available at the centre can analyse histopathology, time dependant radiology, biochemistry, microbiologic aspects and behavioral studies.

CLATR has a capability of undertaking toxicity studies ranging from short term to long term toxicity studies in rodents. The center offers most comprehensive toxicity testing service which is carried out in accordance with OECD, ICH and WHO guidelines.

The vivarium is situated in the ground floor, strategically separated from rest of the facilities available in the complex. The animal facility alone is spread over 11,000 sq. ft with 14 units for maintenance of four species of animals namely mice, rat, guinea pig and rabbits for housing, breeding and experimental purposes. The spatial flow of traffic in the vivarium is uniquely designed so as to have easy maneuverability of both staff and animals. The entrance to the facility is through change room via gowning area and an air shower. Each of the animal rooms is provided with two automatic doors (one for the clean and another for the return corridor) specifically designed for lab animal facility. The exit is only through the return corridor.

The facility is maintained with four dedicated air handling units, which ensures the entry of filtered clean air for the laboratory animals. The facility is equipped with the state-of-art sterilization equipment on par with current standards used in clinical medicine. The quarantine, which is strategically situated near a specific entrance, follows a strict protocol to limit the entry to healthy animals alone.

There is a dedicated hydraulic lift with air showers for the transport of animals to the operation theater. There is a provision to house large experimental lab animals also.

The bio-waste generated is disposed according to the regulations of Pollution Control Board. A chute is designed to convey the surgical and necropsy biowaste to the common dumpster which is situated outside the facility (in the ground floor), for appropriate disposal thereafter

Operation Theater

On the first floor, there is a well-equipped operation theater proximal to the hydraulic lift. The operation theater and the post operative care rooms have an exclusive AHU unit. The OT has a custom-made table which could be used, not only for small lab animals but also for larger ones like goat, sheep, dog and pig. The facilities in the theater include anesthetic apparatus (Moduflex Labvet, Canada) with isoflurane vaporizer (Meditec, England), small animal ventilator (CWE, USA), oxygen cylinders, suction apparatus, twin offset ceiling model shadow-less lamp and all surgical equipment required for the executing innovative invasive procedures on laboratory animals.

Clinical Investigations and Radiology

As a invaluable extension to vivarium, the center has extensive facility to carryout routine clinical evaluations under one roof, thereby removing the hassles for the investigator. The tests can include the following:

  • Blood cell counting using five part hemo-analyser.
  • Blood and body fluid biochemical analysis using autoanalyser
  • Excision/Incision biopsy and histopathology
  • Radiolography
